The department has rolled out two Dodge 5500 rapid-response vehicles and two Ford Explorers, which not only race to the scene more efficiently but also trim down maintenance costs by 74% and shave fuel expenses by 11%. This shiny new gear signifies the department's commitment to fiscal responsibility and firefighting prowess, aiming to better serve the community without bleeding taxpayer dollars dry. Fire Chief Jim Brown said, "These upgrades represent our commitment to fiscal responsibility and operational readiness," as per the North Bend official press release.
The department's gear-up doesn't end at vehicles; they're also eyeing a ladder truck upgrade with a crisp price tag of $1.7 million, scoping out various funding avenues to replace the antique they're currently operating, dating back to 1994. This year, grants nabbed fueled efforts to mitigate wildfire risks with dollars allocated for underbrush clearing and fire hydrant TLC.
The department has had a busy year, responding to an average of 6.5 emergencies daily in 2024, with the total service calls seeing a spike of 18.5% since 2019. However, thanks to their proactive approach, fire-related incidents saw a 13% nosedive. And it's not all sirens and smoke for North Bend's bravest – their hearts are set on the community as much as their duty, having engaged in public education efforts with fire safety presentations, educational training, and warmly received events such as "Waffles with Santa."
