The Ohio Department of Aging is searching for candidates to join the venerable Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame for 2025. This initiative aims to celebrate Ohioans aged 60 and up who have made an indelible mark on their communities, professions, or specific fields of interest. Those wishing to honor someone who fits the bill have until March 31 to submit their nominations for this year's September induction.
In a statement obtained by SFist, ODA Director Ursel J. McElroy expressed anticipation for the upcoming ceremony. According to the Ohio Department of Aging, "The Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame is one of our annual highlights at the Department of Aging, and we are eager to welcome another class of outstanding Ohioans this September." The ODA encourages locals to get involved and spotlight someone deserving in their circle whose contributions have bettered Ohio society. Since its inception in 1977, the Hall of Fame has welcomed just 514 select individuals.
Recognition in the Hall of Fame isn't only about lifetime achievement but also focuses on accomplishments achieved or pursued vigorously after age 60. To qualify, nominees should hail from Ohio or have called the state their home for a decade or more. While the Hall of Fame does consider posthumous nominations, it requires that the individual passed away within the last five years and reached 60 at the time of their passing. All nominations must be fresh submissions since the prior closing period ended on May 31, 2024.
Those submitting nominations can look forward to potentially seeing their nominee joining the prestigious ranks of past inductees, which comprise leaders from various fields such as business, education, science, the arts, and more. Nominees are chosen based on a thorough assessment of the breadth and impact of their contributions to the community. The ODA welcomes repeat nominations for individuals who may have been overlooked in previous years so long as they still meet the eligibility criteria.
