Ohio's initiative to stem the tide of opioid addiction, led by the Attorney General's Scientific Committee on Opioid Prevention and Education (SCOPE), hits a five-year milestone. Established in 2019, SCOPE has been at the forefront of utilizing research and education to battle a crisis that is devastating Ohio communities. In a statement reported by the Ohio Attorney General's Office, Dave Yost emphasized that "this is a fight Ohio can't afford to lose."
Key to SCOPE's mission is the prevention of addiction through scientific discovery. Over the past half-decade, this committee has brought together medical professionals, pharmacists, behavioral scientists, and data analysts in a concerted effort to identify and mitigate risk factors - notably, pinpointing genetic vulnerabilities to opioid use disorder.
The group's approach goes beyond research; it extends to practitioner education and public awareness about the safe handling of medications. Specifically, SCOPE has pushed forward dialogue on the importance of the proper storage and disposal of unused medication, aiming to nip the problem in the bud before misuse can escalate into addiction.
To commemorate the progress and chart the course ahead, the Attorney General's office has released a report and video detailing SCOPE's impacts and future objectives.
