Ali Mirchi, associate professor at Oklahoma State University (OSU), has received the 2024 James A. Whatley Award for Meritorious Research in Agricultural Sciences. This award, presented by OSU’s Division of Agricultural Science and Natural Resources, recognizes exceptional research in agricultural sciences and has been awarded since 1982.

According to OSU News, at the OSU Agriculture Appreciation and Awards Luncheon, Mirchi expressed his gratitude, saying, "I am truly honored to receive this recognition. Addressing water resources challenges in agriculture presents exciting research opportunities, but it also means tackling real problems that impact farmers and communities on the front lines of food security and environmental protection. I take these challenges seriously and work closely with stakeholders to find solutions that drive real-world action." His research focuses on creating sustainable human-environmental systems to address climate change, urbanization, irrigation expansion, and ecosystem challenges. Mirchi's work has contributed to global water management policies and has had a significant impact on food, feed, and fiber production.

Mirchi’s interdisciplinary research has earned him recognition, with 70 journal articles, including a highly cited paper in the "Journal of American Water Resources Association" in 2023. Mari Chinn, professor and department head of biosystems and agricultural engineering, praised Mirchi, saying, "Dr. Mirchi has demonstrated the commitment and ability to serve as a leader of novel, high-impact research that addresses the most pressing water resources challenges of the 21st century that threaten our food security and ecosystem sustainability," in an OSU News report.

Mirchi has received international recognition, including an OSU nomination for the Blavatnik National Awards for Young Scientists and the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture Partnership Award. He is also committed to education, delivering at least 10 presentations annually at conferences to train graduate students and post-doctoral scholars.

The James A. Whatley Award honors James A. Whatley, an animal geneticist at OSU who served as director of the agricultural experiment station system for four decades. The award continues to recognize individuals who make significant contributions to agricultural sciences and enhance OSU's status as a leading research institution.
