An Oxnard resident, Jaylin Edwards, received a lengthy prison sentence for a 2019 shooting that left two people injured, one of whom is a young girl now paralyzed and cognitively impaired. Edwards, born on December 28, 1996, was handed down a punishment of 64 years and 8 months to life in state prison for the attempted murder and assault that took place, as disclosed in a statement from the District Attorney's Office.
On the evening of July 2, 2019, Edwards and a juvenile believed a rival had a shot into a Port Hueneme home. Instead, they found a family of five in their living room, which resulted in the wounding of a seven-year-old girl and her mother. Although they fled the scene, authorities later arrested the 17-year-old co-defendant in July 2019, where one of the two firearms used in the crime was recovered. The second firearm remains at large, according to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.
After his arrest and subsequent trial that found him guilty of both attempted murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm, Edwards faced convictions for shooting at an inhabited dwelling and two counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. "This sentence reflects the serious nature of the defendant's conduct and the immeasurable harm and trauma it caused multiple victims," Deputy District Attorney Stephanie Horlick commented, prosecuting the case. The jury also found Edwards guilty of multiple special allegations, including those for causing great bodily injury and discharging a firearm with intent, as per the District Attorney's Office's communication.
The juvenile co-offender involved in the Port Hueneme shooting was charged in juvenile court. His case is still pending. As for the victims and their recovery, the young girl was hospitalized for three months, with part of her care involving a three-week coma. Though she returned home, her injuries have left permanent scars, including paralysis and cognitive impairment. Her mother also needed surgery due to her gunshot wounds but was released the next day, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office noted.
