A situation that had the potential to escalate into violence has been de-escalated in southeast Shelby County. Yesterday, shortly before noon, deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) were dispatched to the 6600 block of Silver Oak Cove, responding to a domestic disturbance that had involved a shooting. An adult male had been shot and was subsequently taken to the hospital in a non-critical state, referenced from a report by FOX13 Memphis.
The suspect, who was said to have been armed with a handgun, subsequently barricaded himself in a home with two other family members, according to a statement released by the SCSO. In response to the situation, negotiators and SWAT teams were sent to the scene, and several homes nearby were evacuated for safety reasons, as reported by WREG. Emphasizing the gravity of the potential threat, one neighboring resident articulated to FOX13 Memphis their fear for "whoever is in their home."
The standoff concluded without further incident, as the armed suspect surrendered to SWAT deputies around 4 p.m. "We want to help you, we’re not here to hurt you. Help me to help you," a negotiator implored during the tense situation, urging the suspect to lay his weapon down and surrender. The suspect's compliance was ultimately achieved, resulting in a peaceful resolution with no additional injuries reported, according to information provided by WREG.
The events of the day left residents, who already have expressed concerns about ongoing issues in the area as evidenced by the reports of frequent disturbances, quite shaken. "Every day, a lot of cars. A lot of pow pow every day," shared one neighbor in an interview with FOX13 Memphis. The SCSO detectives continue their investigation into the disturbance that initially sparked the events of the standoff. No names have been released regarding the individuals involved in the incident, and charges, if any, have yet to be disclosed, as per updates from Action News 5.
