The City of Phoenix announced its operational schedule for the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 20, highlighting that most city offices will be closed in observance of the holiday. However, Phoenix residents can expect unaltered trash and recycling collection services. The solid waste collection for the city will not change, operating on its normal schedule, as reported by the City of Phoenix.
Although festivities and remembrance activities will pause the daily hustle for many, the essentials of urban life persist. This includes the city's sanitation services, which confirms that the Martin Luther King Jr. Day will not interrupt the curbside collection, as detailed by the City of Phoenix. The two transfer stations located at 27th Ave. and North Gateway, however, will take a day off and close their doors on January 20.
Residents should note that the Public Works Customer Contact Center will be closed for the upcoming holiday but will resume service at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21. Library users should also plan ahead, as all Phoenix Public Library locations will be closed for the day. However, book drops and digital resources will remain available 24/7. Despite the holiday, parking enforcement in Phoenix will continue as usual, with meters being monitored from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Those needing urgent assistance with street-related issues, such as traffic signals or pothole repairs, can still access the city's 24/7 hotline, which provides specific numbers for various services. In contrast, the S'edav Va'aki Museum will stay open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, offering special programming to celebrate the holiday, as per the City of Phoenix.
Commuters relying on public transport will find that both bus and light rail services will operate on a regular weekday schedule, although there will be no Express or RAPID bus service on January 20. While customer service for public transit will be up and running from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., some transit centers, including the Ed Pastor, Sunnyslope, and Central Station, will close for the holiday. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport encourages travelers to book parking ahead of time and check flight statuses with airlines prior to airport arrival to ensure a smooth experience, backed by the assistance of helpful Navigator volunteers in purple.
