Over the past weekend, Pierce County deputies faced a series of troubling incidents on local roads involving DUI drivers and a felon on the run. In a particularly distressing event recounted by the Pierce County Sheriff's Department Blotter, a family was struck from behind by a DUI suspect at the intersection of 200th St. E and Canyon Rd. shortly before 1 pm last Saturday. The driver attempted to flee but later crashed into a fenced retention area down the road. With a blood warrant in hand, deputies apprehended the DUI suspect who is now set to face multiple charges.
The following day, a DUI collision occurred at 116th St. S and 19th Ave. Ct. S. when a driver veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with another vehicle. "Fortunately, it was not at a high rate of speed and no occupants were injured," the blotter reports. The suspect's vehicle was impounded, and they were arrested and charged with DUI.
Amidst these road safety incidents, deputies also encountered a known criminal during the early morning hours. While patrolling near ACE Hardware in Graham, they identified and arrested a woman with multiple felony warrants out for residential burglary, making false statements, motor vehicle theft, theft 2nd degree, and criminal trespass 2nd degree. She was subsequently booked into the Pierce County Jail.
The weekend proved to be also peppered with numerous other reports ranging from mail theft to domestic assaults and mental health incidents. In particular, the Sheriff's Department noted an uptick in mail theft, attributing the rise to the seasonal mailing of tax documents. "We do tend to see mail theft increase this time of the year with tax documents being mailed so be mindful and secure your items," the blotter mentions. With these reminders, the department urges the community to remain vigilant and emphasizes the importance of not drinking and driving to help maintain safety.
