According to the National Weather Service, the Pittsburgh area is bracing for another chilly day with a slight chance of snow later this afternoon. As Steel City's temperatures strive to climb moderately, residents should be prepared for minimal snow accumulation if flurries decide to grace the skies.
"Temperatures should drop another couple degrees before recovery begins after daybreak," the National Weather Service stated. Despite the cold snap, Pittsburghers might not have to bundle up quite as tightly. Overnight lows were kept slightly higher due to mid-cloud coverage. Although wind chill values may still dip below -10F in the high elevations, the Cold Weather Advisory for eastern Tucker County is expected to lift by 10 AM this morning.
Into the evening hours, light snow showers have a shot at appearing, primarily north of Pittsburgh or in the higher elevations. "The best chance for snow showers will come this evening and into the overnight hours with increased BL moisture and trough passage," the National Weather Service reported. Nevertheless, snowfall levels will likely remain low, with marginal moisture and fleeting, relatively light accumulation expected.
As the week progresses, those longing for warmth must remain patient. The forecast insists that below-average temperatures will persist through the start of next week. Weekend temperatures will moderate compared to the past week but remain below average, hinting at afternoon highs hovering in the upper 20s and low 30s. Some parts of the region may barely breach the freezing mark for highs, with Sunday boasting a 50-70% chance as far north as Pittsburgh.
For those with aviation interests, a VFR (Visual Flight Rules) status is expected to be maintained through this afternoon. However, a cold front approaching later today is set to cause an uptick in wind, with gusts potentially reaching around 20 knots from the southwest. This front could also bring scattered snow showers and a shift down to MVFR (Marginal Visual Flight Rules) ceilings.
The Pittsburgh area watches and warnings remain minimal, save for the Cold Weather Advisory in West Virginia's Tucker County. Locals are advised to stay updated with the latest weather developments and prepare for the brisk conditions that continue to define this winter season in the Northeast.
