Portland is taking a step forward with its Future of Keller initiative, focusing on the development of two Broadway-capable venues. City Council has been actively pushing for progress since it authorized the project back in October 2024. The updates, as reported by the City of Portland's Office of Arts & Culture, shed light on the work being carried out by the dedicated team set to breathe new life into the city's arts scene.
As part of the efforts to ensure effective management of Portland’5 venues, including Keller, the city and Metro have recruited a workgroup. Comprised of 19 community representatives with expertise spanning arts, culture, venue management, and more, the group's mandate is to explore the optimal operating model. This diverse set of members, ranging from Brian Moore of Prosper Portland to Susan Dixon of Portland Opera, are expected to deliver their recommendations by June 2025.
The project includes a market feasibility analysis to ascertain the demand and appropriate size of these venues, aiming to have a consultant in place by summer 2025. In addition to evaluating the potential Broadway-size venues' impact on the local market, there's also a traffic study in the works, tasked with unraveling how these cultural hubs could alter downtown's flow, with the team set to start by the summer as well.
The overall project is laid out in an estimated sequencing plan distributed across three phases: planning and development; pre-construction and construction; and finally, construction and post-construction, giving stakeholders a clear view of the road ahead. Notably, the Keller Auditorium, an aging entity lacking seismic resilience, requires modern upgrades to weather future calamities and keep in step with modernity. After extensive deliberation, the City, Metro, and community partners opted for a renovation of Keller, paired with a new build close to Portland State University—both concentrated efforts at fortifying Portland’s cultural infrastructure.
