Todd Russell Perkins, a well-known attorney in Detroit, announced his candidacy for mayor yesterday. According to Metro Times, Perkins touted his decision as one born of community engagement and careful deliberation. He joins the fray as at least the sixth candidate after incumbent Mayor Mike Duggan declared he would not seek a fourth term.
The forming of an exploratory committee preceded Perkins's decision to run to gauge support and campaign feasibility. "I am excited and compelled to pursue this opportunity because Detroit deserves strong and experienced leadership," Perkins stated, as reported by ClickOnDetroit. The committee, combined with continuous engagement with community leaders, helped them to better understand significant issues facing Detroiters.
Perkins's previous professional victories may lend to his appeal as a candidate. Among his notable cases, he has defended high-profile figures such as 36th District Court Judge Kenneth King and former Flint emergency manager Darnell Earley, both embroiled in controversies. A Dartmouth College alumnus and University of Detroit Mercy law graduate, Perkins has not only practiced criminal law but is also experienced in transactional law, foreign currency trading, and real estate, as Deadline Detroit points out.
Regarding campaign leadership, the Honorable Richard P. Hathaway, a retired judge, has been tapped to chair Perkins's campaign committee. A formal kick-off event will unveil the committee formation and further details. Perkins, who also once taught French in Detroit, seems set to pivot his rich legal and educational experience towards tackling unfulfilled commitments within the community and shaping a path forward for what he considers a deserving Detroit, per his announcement covered by ClickOnDetroit.
