Two Queens teens are garnering attention for their commendable response to a crisis when they aided a woman who had taken a severe fall. Colin Winn and Christian Fiorillo, both 13 and students at St. Gregory's School, were recognized with official citations of honor by the New York State Assembly for their quick actions to assist 76-year-old Janet Miranda, who suffered a dislocated shoulder and a broken nose after tripping on the sidewalk, as confirmed in a report by ABC7NY.
The duo was walking home from school, a daily ritual where their path would typically include a stop at the local deli, but on this consequential day, they encountered Miranda in distress, bleeding significantly, and without hesitation jumped into action delivering first aid, Fiorillo trying to think of the right thing to do how to stop the bleeding and Winn calling an ambulance and grabbing napkins to help her, as they detailed their experience in an interview with CBS News.
Their admirable efforts not only brought Miranda the urgent medical attention she required but also prompted an acknowledgment from their school's principal and the state assembly. "They are a symbol of what we should all be," Assemblymember Davin Weprin remarked, pointing to the example set by the youths in a statement acquired by ABC7NY. These sentiments were echoed by CBS News, which quoted Weprin during a ceremony held in the students' honor, "We gave them an official Assembly citation for special recognition, which they certainly deserve. They're really, in my opinion, real heroes." The ceremony was not just a formality but was graced by Miranda herself, expressing her intent to "pay it forward" after witnessing such kindness.
The boys have remained modest throughout the flurry of praise with Winn commenting to CBS News, "I think it's just good knowing what we did was right and that we could help somebody," reflecting a sense of duty over desire for recognition, Fiorillo added, "I don't think it should be a big deal we just did the right thing," showcasing their straightforward take on the ethics of their actions, which though may appear simple carries significance that resonates deeply within a community when youths rise to the occasion not for the applause but because it's the humane thing to do.
