In Raleigh, North Carolina, a local bail bond agent has found herself on the wrong side of the law, with the North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey reporting her arrest on multiple charges, including embezzlement and obtaining property by false pretense. Shaqura Tyeisha Cobb, 34, was arrested after accusations surfaced claiming she pocketed bail premiums instead of using them to secure the release of inmates from jail, as reported by the North Carolina Department of Insurance.
Specifically, Ms. Cobb is charged with three counts each of the aforementioned crimes, believed to have misappropriated a sum total of $13,300. The Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division outlines that the illegal activities took place between June and August, 2024, involving three jail inmates—two from Wake County Detention Center and one from the Franklin County Detention Center. Ms. Cobb, who operates throughout Wake County but holds a license that allows her to conduct business statewide, was handed a $6,000 secured bond upon her arrest on Sunday.
The Department of Insurance, continuing its probe into the situation, has encouraged anyone else with complaints against Cobb to reach out to either the Bail Bond Regulatory division or the Criminal Investigations Division. Contact information for both arms of the department was provided to aid potential witnesses or victims in this matter.
"Bail bond agents hold a position of trust and must be held to a high standard," Commissioner Causey stipulated in a statement. Cobb's arrest follows multiple complaints received by the Department of Insurance, prompting the investigation that has brought these charges to light. This situation not only illustrates an alleged breach of professional ethics but also underlines the inherent vulnerabilities in systems meant to uphold the trust between legal actors and the public they serve.
