If you find yourself in Raleigh with an itch for some brainy weekend activities, Mordecai Historic Park might just be your spot this January. In a series of educational pow-wows for history buffs and the culturally curious, the park’s "Digging Deeper: Stories in Local Archaeology" event is dishing out some serious knowledge, for free.
First up on the roster, Professor Jon Marcoux, hailing from UNC-Chapel Hill's Research Labs in Archaeology, is set to helm a talk about his exploits in educational archaeology. Marcoux isn't just a professor, he's a fieldwork junkie, having taught at the Johns Island Preservation Field School in South Carolina. The place is a significant chunk of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, an area rich in African American history, culture, and sentiment. His lecture is a golden ticket for those who geek out over Black cultural heritage, publicly-engaged preservation, and archaeology.
You needn't RSVP to get your learn on, but the park encourages a heads-up if you plan on attending. Pop over to Mordecai Historic Park located at 1 Mimosa St. on Saturday, January 25, from 1 to 2 p.m. and soak in the smarts. All ages are welcome to dive into this educational experience that marries local history with preservation, and the intricacies of a culturally charged landscape.
