Rep. Tim Turner (R-Kinta) addressed allegations against the Oklahoma Department of Corrections in the death of inmate Marquel Ross at Oklahoma State Penitentiary. A former sheriff and legislative committee member, Turner investigated the case and shared his findings, according to the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
"I first want to say that it saddens me that this man lost his life, but I also find it disheartening that the true narrative is not being shared," Turner said. He explained that Ross, incarcerated since March 2023, had multiple misconduct violations, including violence and possession of illegal substances, leading to several facility transfers before ending up at Oklahoma State Penitentiary. Just days before his death, Ross updated his emergency contact details. An investigation led to a first-degree murder charge against his cellmate, as reported by the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
Turner emphasizes balanced accountability in the prison system, stating, "We can agree to disagree with the Department of Corrections' policy at times, but it’s time that we don’t just hold the department accountable, we hold the offenders accountable to." He acknowledges the need to address both departmental actions and inmate behavior, suggesting that proven allegations should lead to consequences while unverified claims should not be prolonged. The lawsuit over Ross’s death has initiated discussions on prison conditions, inmate conduct, and justice within correctional facilities, as stated by the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
