In a disturbing breach of trust between caregiver and patient, Richard Emmons, age 55, has been arrested on charges including attempted murder and dependent care abuse, according to a statement released by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. Emmons was apprehended after an incident at a private residence in Canyon Lake, where he allegedly disassembled his paraplegic patient's ventilator, an essential lifeline for the victim.
The incident occurred on Tuesday and was promptly reported to the authorities by the victim's doctor. Before the incident, on Monday, the doctor had terminated Emmons' employment for unspecified reasons. On the following day, she discovered the compromised ventilator and the patient struggling to breathe, a situation bearing stark implications of intentional harm. The patient, who was dependent on 24-hour care, was put at serious risk when the ventilator, their artificial means of respiration, was disassembled.
Lake Elsinore Sheriff's Station deputies responded to a call at the 30100 block of Rim Rock Place in Canyon Lake, meeting with the doctor who reported the crime. Sergent Robert Thomas, the reporting supervisor from the Sheriff's Department, detailed the quick response to the harrowing situation. Emmons, located at the residence, was taken into custody and booked at the Cois Byrd Detention Center, with charges of attempted murder, and torture levied against him alongside dependent care abuse, as reported by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
The investigation into this alarming event continues with fervor, as law enforcement officials urge the community to come forth with any additional information that could aid in the case, as per the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. Investigator Topete, associated with the Lake Elsinore Sheriff's Station, is the point of contact for such information, reflective of the broader strategy of "Community Policing" which seeks to fortify the alliance between law enforcement, and community members. The Riverside Sheriff's Department asserts the critical importance of reporting criminal activity promptly, providing Sheriff's Dispatch contact information and an emergency contact number for urgent cases.
