In a unanimous show of support, the Sacramento City Council has designated its new second-in-command. On Tuesday, the Council conferred the title of Vice Mayor upon Councilmember Karina Talamantes (District 3) and Mayor Pro Tempore upon Councilmember Eric Guerra (District 6) for the year 2025, as per an announcement made on the Sacramento City Express.

These positions, which traditionally rotate on an annual basis, task incumbents with leading council meetings in the mayor's stead and generally being the face of the city when Mayor Kevin McCarty is otherwise engaged. Last year, Councilmember Caity Maple (District 5) and Councilmember Talamantes (District 3) previously held the roles of Vice Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore respectively. "Vice Mayor Talamantes and Mayor Pro Tem Guerra bring valuable experience to their new roles," Mayor McCarty stated. "I am confident they will serve our city with dedication and help us continue making progress on the important work ahead," as quoted by the Sacramento City Express.

Further to the leadership appointments, Mayor McCarty's selections for the council's committees were ratified, ensuring oversight and advisory capacities on public matters ranging from financial scrutiny to racial equity. The committees, comprising Law and Legislation, Personnel and Public Employees, Budget and Audit, and the Racial Equity Committee, now count among their chairs Councilmembers Caity Maple, Rick Jennings, Roger Dickinson, and Mai Vang, respectively.

The sphere of governance in Sacramento extends beyond these committee walls, with council members also appointed to regional representations such as the Sacramento Area Council of Governments and entities like the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency.
