The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office Gang Suppression Unit (GSU) has reported significant success in its efforts to curb gang violence and illegal firearm possession in the region. The unit removed close to 500 illegal firearms from the streets last year and made more than 350 arrests, which included a number of violent gang affiliates, according to a social media post from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
With a clear strategy aimed at proactive investigation and enforcement, the GSU's activities are described as instrumental to the decline in homicide cases and gang-related violence, especially in the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County last year. "By focusing proactive efforts toward illegal firearms and gun violence while remaining abreast of gang-related activity in our region, the goal of GSU is to disrupt the cycle of violence before it escalates," the Sheriff's office detailed in their year-end review.
The targeted approach of the GSU is part of a broader strategy aimed at addressing crime at its root before it develops into more significant threats to public safety. The removal of illegal firearms and the apprehension of individuals potentially connected to criminal networks aims to disrupt the factors contributing to violence and disorder.
