A Sacramento man has issued a guilty plea to charges stemming from the kidnapping of a six-year-old child. Edwin Alonso Cuadros Bravo, 54, is facing a potential life sentence after admitting to his role in an international kidnapping conspiracy that took the victim from Sacramento to Peru, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.
Cuadros Bravo and Yulisa Alexsandra Guevara Wintong, identified as the maternal grandparents of the victim, were involved in the abduction of the child in November 2021. Court documents indicate that the family members did not return the child despite requests from the mother. After extensive efforts, including collaboration with the FBI and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the child was safely returned to the United States in December 2022.
Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith, announcing the plea, highlighted the gravity of the case and the eventual reunification of the child with the mother. Cuadros Bravo, who took his first appearance in custody, has been detained in connection with the charges and awaits his sentencing scheduled for April 21. The details of the case were disclosed in a statement released by the U.S. Attorney's office.
Cuadros Bravo has expressed a willingness to admit guilt, while his co-defendant and wife, Guevara Wintong, has not yet been located to face the charges. She remains presumed innocent until proven guilty. Cuadros Bravo, prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Veronica M.A. Alegría, faces a $250,000 fine in addition to the possibility of life imprisonment. The Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which include various factors, will determine his final sentence.
