In a sobering revelation by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, a 97-year-old woman was found deceased, her life cut short in a violent act allegedly committed by her grandson, Brian Wiggins, at her residence on the 4200 block of American River Drive. The Sacramento Sheriff's Office, in a Facebook post, detailed how a neighbor's call for a welfare check led to the discovery of the crime.
When deputies arrived, they were greeted by Wiggins, 40, and his girlfriend, Dozsha Beckwith, 31, who attempted to misdirect the officers by claiming the elderly woman had departed in an Uber to visit Wiggins' father at an assisted living facility, despite evidence to the contrary, such as a missing section of carpet and safes that appeared forcibly opened and the home looked as though it had faced a violent storm of theft. Following the visible irregularities, law enforcement detained both individuals and, upon inspection of a vehicle registered to Wiggins, they found the victim's body in the trunk, confirming the grim outcome of the wellness call.
Detectives and crime scene investigators worked the scene to piece together the narrative that ended in tragedy. According to the Sheriff's Office, "Detectives learned that Wiggins and Beckwith forced their way inside of her home, looking for a place to stay. When the victim told them to leave, Wiggins beat his grandmother to death." The aftermath involved a concealment effort which culminated in the victim's body being placed in the trunk of Wiggins' vehicle.
The legal ramifications swiftly followed the arrest, with Wiggins charged with murder and Beckwith facing burglary and accessory after the fact charges, and both were booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail, and they are scheduled to appear in court on January 28. The identity of the victim will be disclosed after the Sacramento County Coroner's Office completes its protocols, casting a somber reminder of the fragility of trust, the bond between grandparent and grandchild, and the depth of darkness that can reside within.
