Two 18-year-old men from Saginaw were taken into custody yesterday, accused of stealing from parked cars in Holland Township, Ottawa County. The early morning thefts occurred around 3 a.m. near Riley Street and 136th Avenue, as reported by FOX 17. When deputies from the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office arrived in response to reports of car break-ins, the suspects fled the scene. One suspect was arrested on the spot, and with the assistance of a K9 unit, the other was found at a nearby home, as noted by WZZM 13.
Their capture came swiftly after a chase that began when patrol units arrived at the parking lot where the suspects were reportedly seen rummaging through unguarded vehicles. Law enforcement emphasizes the need for swift action in combating what is described as a growing trend of vehicular thefts. Recovered items believed to have been stolen during the larceny were found in the suspects' possession at the time of their arrest, as per FOX 17. Both individuals now face charges of larceny and resisting and obstructing, as the investigation continues to determine the full extent of their alleged crimes.
The identities of the suspects have been withheld pending arraignment. In light of these events, the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office has reiterated advisories for the public to take precautionary measures against theft by locking their vehicles and not leaving valuables inside, underscoring the importance of vigilance against the backdrop of what they indicated is an uptick in stolen vehicles and car larcenies, as emphasized in a statement obtained by WWMT.
