In a move that acknowledges the intertwining factors contributing to roadway safety, San Antonio's District 5 Councilmember is championing a more integrative strategy for mitigating traffic dangers. The Holistic Traffic Calming Council Consideration Request (CCR) filed by the District 5 Office is slated to amass expertise from the Public Works, Transportation, and Planning departments to create more effective traffic calming measures, according to the city's official website.

San Antonio's slight drop in the 2024 Dangerous by Design report for pedestrian safety is a mixed result. The change may not reflect improvements in the city, but rather worsening conditions elsewhere. However, Councilmember Teri Castillo sees an opportunity to improve community safety. "During my tenure on Council, I regularly hear from District 5 residents over the need for more traffic calming measures to reduce speeding and protect lives," Castillo said on the city's official website. "Dangerous streets affect so many parts of our public life. Speeding commuters shouldn't deter us from walking to school or our parks. With this proposal, we hope to spur additional safety measures into our Neighborhood Traffic Calming Handbook while developing a process where multiple City departments can provide their expertise so we effectively deliver on the safety our residents deserve."

This proposal is more than just words on paper; it represents a pledge, a promise, that could shape the lives of San Antonians. As per the city's official website, the CCR will next be placed on the agenda at the upcoming Governance Committee meeting.
