Broadway around 8:45 p.m.; they were later alerted to a shooting at the MTS Trolley Platform just a few minutes later at approximately 8:51 p.m., prompting them to investigate further the area.

According to a statement from the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, the officers encountered a young Hispanic male thought to be in his early 20s near 1100 Kettner Blvd, where the shooting occurred. During the interaction, an officer fired their weapon, leading to the man being shot, and a handgun was found with him there at the scene. Following the shooting, officers attempted life saving measures which were taken over by paramedics from the San Diego Fire Department, the individual was then hospitalized but did not survive.

The officer's identity has been disclosed as a two-year member of the San Diego Police Department, serving in the Central Division; the officer's name has not been released pending the ongoing investigation. In compliance with standard protocol, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office was summoned to spearhead the investigation into the shooting.
