Colorado has lost a distinguished figure in higher education. Regent Emeritus Jerry G. Rutledge, who notably served on the University of Colorado's Board of Regents from 1995 to 2007, passed away on January 9 at the age of 80. His tenure on the board, according to CU Connections, was marked by significant transformations, including the relocation of the CU Health Sciences Center to what is now the CU Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora.
Rutledge, a University of Colorado Boulder alumnus, was an enduring presence in the university community. His contributions extended beyond his official duties, he also served on the University of Colorado Hospital Board for eight years. It was at CU Boulder where Rutledge's love for his alma mater took hold, a passion that continued unabated throughout his life. He reveled in the university's football and basketball teams and cherished the bonds formed in his fraternity, bonds strong enough to last a lifetime.
In memory of his impact, Rutledge's family has chosen to honor his legacy through the creation of the Jerry Rutledge University of Colorado Football Scholarship. Those wishing to contribute can send donations to the CU Buff Club at 2150 Stadium Drive, Boulder, CO 80309, with checks made payable to the scholarship fund. This gesture is a fitting tribute to a man whose love for university sports was evident to all who knew him.
The community gathered to remember Rutledge's life at a service held at 11:30 a.m. on January 24 at the First Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs. His legacy, deeply intertwined with the University of Colorado, will continue to guide and inspire future generations. Contributions to his memorial scholarship will ensure to forever connect his passion for CU athletics with the students who, thanks to his support, may follow in his footsteps.
