Motorists in San Mateo County should anticipate a DUI checkpoint today. The checkpoint aims to crack down on impaired driving from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the 100 block of El Camino Real in Millbrae.
Officials stress the importance of the community's role in maintaining road safety, highlighting that this includes not only abstaining from alcohol before getting behind the wheel but also being mindful of the potential effects of prescription and over-the-counter medications as well as legal substances like marijuana; despite the legality of marijuana for medical and recreational use, operating a vehicle under its influence remains illegal, and similar attention should be heeded towards any substance that could impair driving abilities, a goal that the Sheriff's office strives to emphasize with such enforcement measures.
Consequences for those who get caught driving under the influence during this or any other time are steep, with first-time DUI convicts facing fines that can total approximately $13,500, in addition to the possibility of a suspended driving license, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office's DUI checkpoint initiative has been funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety in collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
