The Santa Monica Police Department is currently on the hunt for a suspect involved in a deadly shooting that took place in the early hours of January 15. The suspect, identified as Fabian Mendez, is at large following the incident where a man was fatally shot in the 200 Block of Broadway around 1:30 a.m. According to the KTLA report, Mendez is described as a Hispanic male, 6 feet 3 inches tall, and weighing about 280 pounds with noticeable tattoos, including “Zamora” on his forearms. The police have warned the public that Mendez is considered armed and dangerous and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

It's been reported that just prior to the shooting, the victim, a man believed to be homeless, was seen in an altercation with an unidentified woman. Mendez supposedly approached and then proceeded to chase the victim into the street before shooting him in the back. The suspect was last spotted running northbound in Alley 2 before disappearing from sight, as detailed by the City of Santa Monica. Witnesses and anybody who might hold knowledge of Mendez's whereabouts are strongly encouraged to reach out to the authorities but warned not to approach or directly engage with the suspect.

The victim, who has yet to be named pending the notification of next of kin, was described as a black male in his 30s. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found him lying on the ground but were unable to save his life. Alongside seeking Mendez, the Santa Monica Police Department is also appealing to the community, needing any vital pieces of information which could lead them to apprehend the gunman. According to the Santa Monica Government's official announcement, the suspect had fled the scene and remains to be found.

Detectives working the case have made public their contact details, urging community members to partake in the search. Det. Reyes can be reached at 310-458-4852 or via email at [email protected], and Det. Sergeant Lozano is available at 310-458-8774 or at [email protected].
