Seattle residents can expect to hold onto their umbrellas for a bit longer, as the National Weather Service (NWS) in Seattle forecasts continued rain and showers into the new year. The weather outlook for today indicates an 80% chance of precipitation, with rain set to start primarily after 1 pm, and temperatures achieving a high near 48 degrees. The NWS report details that new precipitation could accumulate between a tenth and a quarter of an inch.
The wet weather is predicted to persist into the evening, with a 90% chance of rain and a low of around 45 degrees. South winds are to pick up, gusting as high as 20 mph. The city will then see a slight reprieve Sunday morning, but showers might return post-10 am. This pattern of interspersed showers will likely hang through the early part of the week, as Monday promises mostly sunny skies, but with an advent of fog settling by nighttime.
Those expecting clearer skies may have to wait until Tuesday when areas of fog in the early hours will give way to mostly sunny conditions with a high again near 48 degrees. But the evening could bring showers back to the forecast. And while Wednesday and Thursday offer partly sunny reprieves, the possibility of rain looms into the following weekend.
The NWS outlook casts a typical Pacific Northwest narrative for this time of year—mild temperatures and on-again, off-again rain. With the exception of Monday, when the city anticipates briefly basking under mostly sunny skies, the weather pendulum is set to swing back towards more cloud cover and periodic rain showers. Temperatures throughout the week will consistently hover in the low to mid-50s, which, all things considered, is fairly typical for Seattle in January.
