Hawai‘i Island police have apprehended Kawai James Pomroy, the second of three men involved in a dramatic escape from Hale Nani Correctional Facility last month. Pomroy, 41, was taken into custody by Park Rangers at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park on Tuesday around 2:45 p.m., according to the police report.

In addition to charges related to the escape, including second-degree escape and first-degree theft of a motor vehicle, Pomroy was also arrested on a Warden’s warrant for a furlough violation, with no bail set. Bail for the escape-related charges was set at $9,000. Police confirmed that another escapee, Joseph Canito Fernandez, was arrested on December 18, 2024. The third escapee, Clyde Takeshi Talosaga Loa Jr., remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous.

The incident began on the evening of December 13, 2024, when Pomroy, along with Fernandez and Loa, escaped from Hale Nani Correctional Facility without authorization. Surveillance footage showed them driving a vehicle belonging to a facility employee, which was later found at a property on Tiki Lane in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates. Pomroy's arrest brings police closer to resolving the case.

Authorities continue to advise caution and request that anyone with information regarding Loa’s whereabouts come forward. The public can contact the police department’s non-emergency line or reach Detective David Po‘ohina of the Area I Criminal Investigation Section.
