Zeldin committed to partnering with local Arizona stakeholders to develop tailored solutions that can meet the specific demands of the region.
Arizona's air quality woes, especially in Maricopa County, stem largely from natural origins and pollutants from neighboring states and countries, with 80 percent of ozone pollution coming from these sources. Traditional EPA strategies seem to not cut it, prompting Kelly to secure assurances from Zeldin on prioritizing state-specific issues, such as air quality permits and emission offset rules, as detailed by the Senator's Office. Highlighting the water contamination challenges in Tucson, Kelly emphasized the shutdown of nearly 30 groundwater wells due to PFAS contamination—a critical concern as these serve as a backup during the state's prolonged drought periods.
"We’ve been working closely with state and local officials and our business community," Kelly said. "And there are specific actions where we’re asking for EPA’s partnership. I’d like to ask for your commitment to working with us on these issues," as stated by the Senator's Office. Furthermore, Zeldin confirmed to "absolutely" have his team review the Legacy Mine Clean Up Act, which strives to accelerate the cleanup of mines in the Western United States. This willingness to provide a focused review illustrates the nominee's readiness to tackle regional environmental challenges head-on.
In response to Arizona's issues, Zeldin conveyed a sense of urgency and cooperation. "Your priorities will be mine," he assured Kelly, agreeing to diligently review and prioritize the state's EPA-related concerns without pre-judging any outcomes. This hands-on approach is particularly pivotal in the face of Tucson's urgent problems with PFAS—a contaminant in the groundwater—and the city's $71 million remediation tab, the Senator's Office noted.
