
A tragic accident unfolded yesterday morning in Jamaica, Queens, when a 63-year-old man, whose name has yet to be released, met his demise after his SUV veered out of control, slamming into a detached garage. The incident occurred around 5:20 a.m. when his Toyota RAV4 unexpectedly mounted the curb at the intersection of 90th Ave. and 143rd St., and continued its unhindered course until it collided with the structure where an unoccupied Toyota Prius was parked within, as NY Daily News reported.
According to the NYPD's Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad, the garage's collapse ensued on top of both vehicles, entombing the RAV4 and incapacitating its driver, the SUV crashed through the driveway before it unleashed its final devastating blow against the garage, this sequence of events was confirmed by police from the 103rd Precinct upon their arrival in response to an emergency call placed at 5:21 a.m. FDNY units were dispatched, arriving at 5:40 a.m. to extract the man from the debris-laden vehicle, as detailed by QNS.
The rescue efforts, unfortunately, weren’t enough to save the driver, who was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, only to be pronounced dead shortly thereafter, as conveyed by authorities. Amidst the chaos and ruin, Eddie Campbell, the affected garage owner, recounted to NY Daily News, "My father’s Toyota Prius is buried" within the crumbled architecture he lamented, having witnessed the dreadful aftermath where the man was "unconscious" when he was extricated from his vehicle.
Inspectors from the city's Department of Buildings were summoned to the calamity site to assess the damage and declared that because of the SUV's impact the detached garage had capitulated folding into an unrecoverable state, and a neighboring two-car garage had partially succumbed, in their subsequent measures, the DOB issued a full vacate order for the most affected garage and a partial vacate order for the neighboring structure, ensuring public safety in the aftermath of the untimely devastation that proceedings, the spokesman for the NYPD added that there have been no arrests and the investigation is sincere ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad, as noted by QNS.
