At a Montgomery County shopping center on Sunday, where 24-year-old Maikol Darinson Vicente Gomez is charged with a series of attempted machete assaults. Montgomery County Department of Police reported that Gomez, from Silver Spring, targeted three individuals near the commercial hub on Broadbirch Drive and Tech Road.
The incident, which took place around 5:42 p.m., prompted an urgent response from law enforcement as the man, armed with a machete, made violent overtures towards passersby; he subsequently led officers on a chase through the parking lot, where he struck vehicles with the weapon before a stumble led to his disarmament and arrest. During the pursuit, the machete-wielding individual sought to intimidate and potentially injure these bystanders, evidently without provocation, before they managed to flee to safety, averting physical harm.
In the aftermath of the harrowing attempts, local authorities were able to secure the machete and ensure the suspect was placed into custody. Gomez is currently held at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, the official press release detailed the charges against him, which include three counts of first-degree assault, second-degree assault, two counts of vandalism, resisting arrest, and related offenses.
Gomez faces the legal system without the possibility of a bond, signaling the gravity of the charges. Montgomery County has clearly stated its intent to uphold safety and mete out justice for these potentially lethal confrontations and in this instance.
