In a bid to enhance health equity and access among its residents, South Milwaukee has debuted a public health vending machine outside the City Hall, providing free health supplies around the clock. According to a press release by the City of South Milwaukee, the South Milwaukee-St. Francis Health Department utilized grant funding to install the machine, which was greenlit by the South Milwaukee Common Council on September 3, 2024.
The innovative machine dispenses crucial items at no cost, including nasal Narcan (Naloxone), fentanyl test strip kits, Deterra medication disposal bags, gun locks and condom kits, and it aims to extend the availability of these items beyond the Health Department's regular hours, which sometimes creates accessibility hurdles for those tied to the traditional 9-to-5 grind, as reported by the City of South Milwaukee.
"The Health Department appreciates this opportunity from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and is excited to be able to offer our residents the option of obtaining these life-saving items 24/7," Jacqueline Ove, Public Health Administrator for the South Milwaukee-St. Francis Health Department, was quoted as saying in the City of South Milwaukee official announcement. Similarly, Mayor Jim Shelenske reinforced the sentiment, stating, "By installing a public health vending machine outside City Hall, we’re ensuring that essential health supplies are accessible to our residents 24/7 – because wellness shouldn’t depend on the time of day."
The vending machine at 2424 15th Avenue was placed to reduce stigma and make it easier for people to access harm reduction and public health supplies privately, as per the City of South Milwaukee. While the machine offers convenient access, the Health Department staff are available to provide support and education based on the community's needs, offering a balance for different comfort levels.
