As temperatures plummet, St. Charles Parish is taking steps to ensure its residents have a safe, warm place to take refuge. The Edward A. Dufresne Community Center in Luling will transform into a warming shelter starting at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, January 20, providing essential protection from the cold for those in need. This temporary shelter, located at 274 Edward Dufresne Parkway, will provide locals a lifeline as the cold snap bites, according to the St. Charles Parish.
Residents in need of warmth must arrive before 11 p.m., the dedicated cut-off time for admissions, with a valid ID to prove parish residency, and should be aware that, should no one avail themselves of the shelter by midnight, the facility may shut its doors. Once guests are settled, they'll have access to cots and basic amenities, with the Red Cross supplying a limited number of pillows and blankets. However, to ensure comfort throughout their stay, guests are encouraged to come prepared with additional blankets, snacks, and water, as reported by the St. Charles Parish.
Officials from St. Charles Parish have indicated that the shelter will remain operational until the chilling grip of the cold weather subsides and temperatures edge back above freezing. For more information and updates, residents can visit the St. Charles Parish official website. This compassionate community response not only emphasizes the value of preparedness during a freeze but, more importantly, the inherent connection and support within this Louisiana community.
