A pedestrian fatality has again marred the streets of St. Louis County, this time claiming the life of a 79-year-old St. Louis woman, Mary Kaveney. As reported by FirstAlert4, the incident occurred on Monday evening around 7:15 p.m. at the intersection of Manchester and Sappington roads. The lethal encounter involved a 2017 Land Rover Range Rover and resulted in Kaveney being pronounced dead at the scene.
Peculiar as it is grave, the Glendale Police remarked that this accident represents the first pedestrian death in the city in over 75 years. Dissecting the sequence of events, KSDK reports that following being dropped off at a church meeting that she never attended, Kaveney walked down Sappington Road attempting to cross Manchester Road when struck by the oncoming vehicle.
In response to the fatal occurrence, the Missouri State Highway Patrol has now spearheaded the investigation, an action confirmed by officials and reported by FOX2Now. Even though the Kirkwood police were first to reach the grim scene, jurisdictional boundaries necessitated the MSHP's involvement, suggestive of the complex interplay of law enforcement protocols within metro regions.
Considering the broader scope, the incident is part of an unsettling trend as, according to KSDK, St. Louis County has experienced 224 pedestrian crashes this year alone, with 34 proving fatal. Trailnet CEO Cindy Mense, grappling with the escalating numbers, asserted, "If we don't change the infrastructure, we're relying on drivers to just change their behavior." She advocated for tandem efforts of behavior adjustments and infrastructural overhauls to engender real progress in road safety.
