In the escalating financial crisis of the Isaac Elementary School District, State schools chief Tom Horne has taken a definitive step by reaching out to the legislature, urging the prompt passing of an emergency bill. This call to action was detailed in an updated statement made to the State Board of Education, in which Horne shed light on the pressing need for Maricopa County to release funds, ensuring the district's employees are paid their due wages this week, as reported by the Arizona Department of Education.
Horne indicated that the approximately $6 million in reverted Covid relief funds aimed at the district have been secured, yet the process of releasing these funds is insufficiently rapid to meet the imminent payroll deadline, presenting a dilemma as the County has been reticent to pledge its participation in meeting payroll obligations. According to the AZED, Horne's solution is emergency legislation directing the county to advance basic state aid for salary provisioning. In spite, the County would prefer to allocate funds toward debt reconciliation risk putting the whole district's operations and the education of some 5,000 students in peril.
Emphasizing the immediacy of the situation, Horne said, "The release of the federal dollars won't come in time to make tomorrow's payroll, but the legislature is meeting to come up with an emergency bill," as stated by AZED. The obtainment of advanced state aid payments would be a quick fix, deployed immediately after post-legislation approval and gubernatorial sign-off, Horne conveyed this sentiment promisingly.
With a long-run outlook, Horne remains optimistic, citing the district's tangible assets like property and buildings which could be liquidated for financial stability, reassuring concerned parties that the district has the means for eventual economic recovery. Horne adds, "In the long run, the situation is good because they have a lot of property and buildings that they can sell, so we just need to get through this emergency," as noted by the AZED.
