The Suffolk County Sheriff's Department brought a measure of seasonal festivity behind bars with a recent holiday celebration at the House of Correction. According to an update from the department's official Facebook page, Women's Program Services organized an event that featured performances by six of the incarcerated women.
The performances highlighted songs associated with Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and Christmas, brought to life with the help of Matt Savage, a notable jazz pianist and composer. Savage, with his remarkable talent, accompanied the residents, enriching the event with his skillful renditions on the piano. Hot chocolate and ginger cookies, the women enjoyed the treats while uniting over the melodies provided a backdrop of warmth and shared joy.
This musical event is part of SCSD’s efforts to build community spirit and involve residents in rehabilitative activities. Music, known for its therapeutic benefits, was used to soothe and inspire, highlighting the healing power of art. It also gave incarcerated women a chance to showcase their talents and feel a sense of accomplishment and normalcy during the holiday season.
