
Last week, a man was left critically injured in a hit-and-run incident in Monroe. As reported by WBTV, the victim was discovered by a Monroe Police officer around 7:30 a.m. lying in the median of West Roosevelt Boulevard, near Dickerson Boulevard. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was quickly rushed to a hospital in Charlotte and remains in critical condition.
Through the diligent efforts of Monroe Police, a suspect - 38-year-old Lazaurus Cunningham - was accused of hitting the pedestrian and fleeing the scene, a description laid out in the arrest warrant. According to WSOCTV, Cunningham was arrested on Tuesday and charged with felony hit-and-run, causing serious injury or death. After being processed, Cunningham has since been released from the Union County Detention Center.
The incident happened near the Monroe Crossing Mall, further detailed by WCNC, and although it occurred sometime overnight, it wasn't until the morning that the injured man was found by the patrolling officer. No updates on the victim's condition have been given following his admittance into critical care.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the accident and are asking any witnesses or individuals with pertinent information to step forward.
