
A suspect has been taken into custody following an assault incident in Southwest Washington, D.C., according to the Metropolitan Police Department. The altercation, which took place on Sunday, resulted in the victim sustaining a serious laceration after being attacked with a sharp object.
The event occurred around 3:26 p.m. near the intersection of Independence Avenue and L’Enfant Plaza Southwest. The suspect, identified as 52-year-old Crystal Williams-Carter of no fixed address, is reported to have forcibly knocked the victim to the ground before assaulting her. Bystanders stepped in to intervene, causing Williams-Carter to quickly flee the scene. According to the official statement by the Metropolitan Police Department, the victim was swiftly transported to a local hospital by DC Fire and EMS to receive treatment for her injuries, which were serious but not life-threatening.
Police promptly located Crystal Williams-Carter following the incident and arrested her on charges of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. The timely response by both witnesses and First District officers helped to prevent the situation from escalating further.
The involvement of the community in intervening to assist the victim has been highlighted in this case. "Responding officers located the suspect and placed her under arrest," the police department stated, emphasizing the rapidity with which the suspect was apprehended post-assault.
