A tragic death has been reported at the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens, where a 63-year-old man was found fatally stabbed. According to NY Daily News, the victim, Ronald Giacopelli, was discovered face-down on the floor with multiple stab wounds to his back and neck. David Zheng, 23, Giacopelli's roommate and described by some as a close friend, was charged in connection with the slaying.
The incident occurred at Hazel House, a mental health program within the Creedmoor campus. Residents of the facility recounted how both men suffered from serious mental health issues. Despite being friends, it was known that Zheng frequently did not take his medication. As the New York Post reports, upon his apprehension, Zheng claimed to not remember anything from the night of the crime. The knife believed to be the murder weapon was recovered at the scene.
Zheng now faces charges of murder, as well as tampering with physical evidence and criminal possession of a weapon. This has deeply affected the community at Creedmoor, where residents and staff alike are struggling to come to terms with the violence that took place.
"They seemed to be very happy," Shannon Sumpter, a 54-year-old resident, told NY Daily News. Evidence of the men's camaraderie was apparent, as they were often seen together at the facility. It remains to be seen exactly what transpired to lead to such a tragic outcome. The state's Office of Mental Health has announced that they are fully cooperating with the NYPD's investigation and will thoroughly review the circumstances leading up to the event.
Both the facility's representatives and the state Department of Mental Hygiene have not yet offered public comments about the incident.
