Tacoma residents, who've been sitting on piles of jars and bottles since last fall, finally got some good news—the City of Tacoma's Environmental Services Department has brought back glass recycling services at all five of its drop-off locations. In partnership with Glass to Glass out of Portland, where the proverbial recycling phoenix rises from the ashes of our disposable culture, the resumption of glass recycling came after the City conducted a thorough analysis to find a viable, long-term solution for Tacoma's glass, per the City of Tacoma's announcement.

Back in September 2024, global market shifts threw a wrench into Tacoma's glass recycling works, with the previous processor abruptly ending its program which led to Tacoma temporarily sending glass to the landfill, creating an unforeseen environmental hiccup and leaving residents and the City to grapple with the realities of a global market that shows little mercy to the best-laid plans of local sustainability. "Thank you to all of the staff who worked quickly and efficiently to address this challenge," said Lewis Griffith, Solid Waste Division Manager, as cited by the City of Tacoma.

Now, with a renewed spirit of environmental stewardship, the City urges locals to once again bring their glass recyclables to any designated drop-off locations across Tacoma, they can also visit the central Tacoma Recovery and Transfer Center—all of which are detailed on the City's dedicated glass recycling webpage, a resource aimed at demystifying the often opaque world of responsible waste management.
