Tempe and Chandler are teaming up in a creative approach to tackling mental health stigma by bringing advocacy directly to the barber's chair. According to a recent press release, the two cities are enrolling local barbers and stylists in mental health advocacy training, a measure that recognizes the unique position these professionals hold as confidants and community connectors. The initiative, dubbed Beyond the Shop, aims to equip these everyday community figures with the tools to support and guide clients to essential mental health resources.
With the assistance of the Downtown Tempe Authority, the cities invite professionals to a complimentary training event slated for February 3 at the Tempe EnVision Center. By turning barbers and stylists into mental health advocates, the program plans to foster an environment where individuals can discuss their struggles openly, minus the fear of judgment. Reports indicate that the sessions will provide participants with the necessary tools not only to identify, but also to address their clients' mental wellness needs.
Taking part in a larger, nationwide push to promote mental health in underrepresented communities, Beyond the Shop aims to harness the unique social role that these professionals play. "Through the friendly influence of barbers and stylists, we are helping to transform the narrative around mental health and foster a healthier, more resilient future for our residents," Tempe Vice Mayor Doreen Garlid explained. Chandler's Mayor, Kevin Hartke, echoes this sentiment. He noted the community's trust in barbers and stylists, highlighting the initiative as a means to leverage these relationships for the greater public good, as per the City of Tempe.
Further opportunities for engagement come in the form of Downtown Tempe Authority's Barber Battle Series and a free Industry and Community Mixer. Running until June, the former features competitions amongst local professionals with a finale at the Downtown Tempe Juneteenth Block Party. Registration is encouraged for those wishing to showcase their skills. As for the latter, a mixer on February 2 aims to connect barbers and stylists with the community in a more informal setting, again at the Tempe EnVision Center.

The cities of Tempe and Chandler are committed to improving the support systems available for mental health, and with the help of its barbers and stylists, they're taking a step closer to making mental wellness a community priority.
