Residents of Tempe looking to further their education, now have a new financial lifeline. Through a partnership between the City of Tempe and Rio Salado College, adult learners with significant financial needs can apply for the newly minted Tempe Promise Program. According to the City of Tempe, eligible students will receive funds to cover tuition fees and associated costs like books.
Emphasizing the importance of educational access and the program's targeted assistance for first-generation students and historically underrepresented groups, Mayor Corey Woods stated, "The Tempe Promise Program equitably increases postsecondary access, enrollment and attainment while also meeting the needs of working adults by providing financial assistance and access to wrap-around supports." Mayor Woods added, "We are grateful for the continued partnership of Rio Salado College in helping address critical employment and education needs in Tempe." The City of Tempe is putting $69,000 of federal money behind this initiative to cover the program's pilot run through Spring 2025, with a focus on fostering a culture that values higher education.
Rio Salado College President Kate Smith hailed the Tempe Promise Program as "a transformative opportunity for our community, removing financial barriers and opening doors to higher education for adult learners," the City of Tempe stated. Smith explained that the program not only benefits individuals by enhancing their lives but also fortifies the workforce and contributes to Tempe's economic vitality. Participants in the Tempe Promise Program will have access to personalized support that includes academic advising, tutoring, career services, and more.
Applications opened on January 7 for enrollment in the Spring 2025 term, and interested parties have until April 21 to apply. Detailed information about the program and the application process is available at Rio Salado's Tempe Promise page.
