Early this morning, a tractor-trailer collision on I-270 North near Montrose Road in Montgomery County led to a significant fuel spill, causing traffic disruptions and one injury. As reported by DC News Now, the crash occurred around 6 a.m., also involving another vehicle, resulting in the hospitalization of the tractor-trailer's driver, though their condition remains undisclosed.
The aftermath of the crash was still affecting traffic several hours later, with the Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination (MATOC) Program indicating via WJLA that, as of 7 a.m., all Northbound local lanes and one right Express Lane of I-270 were closed to accommodate emergency response and cleanup efforts, with delays expected to persist as motorists were advised to seek alternate routes until further notice.
Pete Piringer, affiliated with the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, detailed on a social media platform the specifics of the closure, noting the spill's impact on traffic flow and the emergency teams' response. Drivers were faced with extended travel times and diverted paths as the usual morning commute was upended by the unforeseen disruption.
Authorities, including the Maryland State Police, who are investigating the cause of the accident, have not released additional information about the incident as cleanup efforts continue and officials work to contain and remove the diesel fuel spill.
