In a recent announcement, Stanislaus County District Attorney Jeff Laugero delivered news that Manuel Junior Maldonado, a 32-year-old Turlock resident, was convicted by a jury of murder alongside related charges, concluding a three-week trial. The conviction revolves around the fatal stabbing of David Mendoza on September 9, 2022. Additional court proceedings are set for this month, to address allegations that Maldonado has a prior violent strike conviction and that the murder was committed for the benefit of the Norteño criminal street gang, according to a social media post from the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office.
On the day of the incident, Turlock Police officers responded quickly to a call at the intersection of Lander and Burnell, where they discovered Mendoza with multiple stab wounds. Despite being rushed to the Emmanuel Medical Center, Mendoza was pronounced dead due to the injuries sustained to his chest. The ensuing investigation by Turlock Police Detectives led to the gathering of camera footage and eyewitness accounts that were to critically piece together the events that unfolded, leading up to the assault that claimed Mendoza's life.
The evidence established that Maldonado, along with two other suspected Norteño gang members, spotted the victim and mistakenly assumed he was a part of a rival gang. The accused and his accomplices assaulted Mendoza, during which time he was fatally stabbed multiple times. Post-attack, Maldonado proclaimed to those near that they were in Norteño territory.
Law enforcement officers apprehended Maldonado within mere hours following the murder. In a subsequent interview with authorities, Maldonado confessed to being an active member of the gang and acknowledged the assault was gang-related. Deputy District Attorney Patrick Hogan prosecuted the case, representing the 'People' in a battle to secure to justice for the tragic loss of Mendoza.
