A tragic occurrence unfolded in Fullerton, California, as a small plane crashed into a furniture warehouse, resulting in two fatalities and 19 injuries on Thursday afternoon. According to NBC Los Angeles, the accident occurred around 2 p.m. in the 2300 block of West Raymer Avenue, close to Fullerton Municipal Airport, with witnesses reporting a loud explosion and subsequent smoke rising from the building's damaged roof.
Authorities identified the aircraft as a home-built Van's Aircraft RV-10, which appeared to be making a return to the airport after takeoff but a Fullerton Police Department statement revealed that the two deceased are believed to have been inside the plane at the time of the crash, meanwhile, 11 individuals were transported to the hospital and eight others were treated and released on-site, their conditions unfortunately not immediately clear. In a separate interview, a witness recounted to FOX LA, "When we were working inside the building we just saw a big blow up on top of the roof, on the ceiling. Then our boss shouted ‘evacuate the building, everybody get out.'"
NTSB investigator Elliott Simpson highlighted in an interview with CBS News Los Angeles the popularity of the model, saying, "It's a very popular airplane ... It's a pretty standard airplane and it's been flying for a long time."
In the wake of the crash, Fullerton Mayor Fred Jung released a statement emphasizing the community's resolve and compassion, "As we come together in the wake of this tragedy, the City of Fullerton is committed to providing support for all those affected and working with the agencies involved to uncover the details of this incident," as stated by FOX LA.
