Early this morning, a collision in Tribeca between a BMW SUV and a taxi resulted in two people being injured after the cab was sent crashing into nearby scaffolding. ABC7NY reports that the incident occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of West Broadway and Chambers Street.
The impact of the crash necessitated the extrication of the two individuals in the taxi by first responders, who immediately rushed to the local hospital, documented to be in stable condition. According to information from 1010 WINS, the victims were the 70-year-old taxi driver and a 75-year-old passenger.
In details from the scene, the BMW suffered heavy front-end damage, while the taxi exhibited significant damage to its driver side. While the two cab occupants were being attended by medical personnel, the driver of the BMW, who does not appear to have sustained injuries, refused treatment at the crash site. The ongoing investigation aims to shed light on what led to the crash.
Responding to concerns of structural integrity, the Department of Buildings made an appearance due to the affected scaffolding, raising suspicions that the adjacent building has possibly been compromised in the incident. Adding to the chaos, access to the Chambers Street station stairwell was blocked due to safety precautions, although it was reported that the 1/2/3 subway lines continued to run despite the obstruction, as reported by 1010 WINS.
As the day unfolds, the thoroughfare where the accident happened remains partially cordoned off as the authorities work on clearing the debris and ensuring public safety. While no further updates on the conditions of the injured parties have been provided, the police are urging potential witnesses to come forward to aid in the investigation.
