A disastrous blaze in South Austin has left two families without homes and seven individuals displaced. The Austin Fire Department was called to the 4300 block of Triboro Trl on Monday, Jan. 20, where they quickly had to battle a house fire that spread to a neighboring residence, as per FOX 7 Austin.
The fire was reported to have begun around 11:45 a.m., with Assistant Chief Thayer Smith telling FOX 7 Austin, “At approximately 11:45 this morning we started getting multiple calls about the side of a house on fire.” The department responded swiftly, with crews managing to prevent the fire from causing further destruction beyond the immediate two houses. According to a report from KXAN, the fire had escalated to a second alarm, prompting more resources to be deployed to the scene.
In a statement obtained by FOX 7 Austin, Smith emphasized the importance of fire preparedness and early detection, saying, “Make sure you have working smoke alarms if there is an incident, you have early detection as you can see within 5 to 6 minutes these houses both had fires through the roof already. These fires spread extremely quickly with the dry conditions and the wind.” Luckily, no injuries were reported despite the fire's rapid expansion.
Finding the cause of the fire did not take long for authorities. Assistant Chief Smith told FOX 7 Austin, "Right now, the investigators have determined that there was an improper discarding of fireplace materials. Ashes were put out early this morning then the side of the house caught on fire, so this will be a weather-related incident." Reflecting upon the incident, Smith advised to carefully extinguish ashes and to utilize "a metal can with a metal lid" when discarding them. This guidance aims to prevent a repeated tragedy. The fire was deemed under control around 2:40 p.m., with crews set to continue monitoring the area, as noted by KXAN.
