Athens, home to the University of Georgia, is mourning as the community grapples with a somber atmosphere. This comes after the unfathomable terror attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, which claimed the lives of 14 individuals and left about 30 injured. A UGA student is among those who sustained critical injuries during the New Year's Day truck attack.
FBI officials have classified the deliberate act in New Orleans as a terrorist attack, clouding the celebratory atmosphere that usually accompanies the bowl season. In the wake of this tragedy, University of Georgia President Jere Morehead extended heartfelt condolences in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, saying, "I am deeply saddened by the devastating attack in New Orleans overnight, and I extend my sincere condolences to the victims, their families, and all those affected by this terrible tragedy." The injured UGA student, Elle Eisele, is currently receiving medical care with no further updates on her condition.
The assailant's indiscriminate act has resulted in the diverse cross-section of lives cut tragically short. Contained in their stories are dreams unfulfilled and families shattered. These were individuals like Nikyra Dedeaux, an 18-year-old with aspirations of nursing, and Billy DiMaio, a 25-year-old who adorned his body with inked names of loved ones, as reported by AP News. Others include a University of Alabama freshman, Kareem Badawi, and a former Princeton football star, Tiger Bech, both of whom were in the throes of promising journeys cut mercilessly short.
The FBI has yet to release identities for all 14 killed during the attack. Athens' students have expressed their distress, with UGA student Thomas Chipman sharing with FOX 5 that the event, "It definitely did put a damper on things … it's definitely nerve-wracking." Meanwhile, at the University Medical Center in New Orleans lies Eisele, with the hopes and prayers of her fellow students as her companions in recovery. Official fundraisers to aid the families of those affected are underway on GoFundMe.
