After receiving reports of an unknown disturbance in Victorville, San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies encountered more than just a neighborhood commotion. The incident, taking place on January 5, led to the apprehension of a man in possession of a controlled substance. Identified as 42-year-old Marcos Lopez, the suspect now faces charges under new California law that aims to rectify the issues spurred by its predecessor, Proposition 47, as reported by the SBSD Victorville Police Department.
Responding to calls at around 9:13 p.m. on the 15700 block of Tokay Street, deputies found themselves at the center of a dramatic scene. The original distress call came from a person claiming that a male, now known to be Lopez, was threatening arson. Swiftly arriving on scene, authorities witnessed Lopez attempting to flee the residence, according to a SBSD Victorville Police Department release. A quickly established perimeter allowed them to detain the suspect with minimal fuss.
Upon his arrest, it was discovered that Lopez was not only in possession of illegal drugs but also had a background marred with similar offenses. The conviction history and violation of parole led to his booking at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto, as per the SBSD Victorville Police Department. These charges are now enhanced under Proposition 36—dubbed "The Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act"—which came into effect on December 18, 2024.
The San Bernardino Sheriff's Department urges anyone with further insights on the case to reach out to the Victorville Police Station or the Sheriff's Dispatch. Anonymity is guaranteed for those preferring discretion, with a tip line available through We-Tip hotline or its website.
