An elderly man from Waikoloa has succumbed to injuries sustained from a single-vehicle crash on Wednesday. The man, identified as 74-year-old Ray Donnell Worrells, was involved in a collision that occurred around 5:11 p.m. at the intersection of Eleele and Haena Streets in Waikoloa Village, as reported via a Nixle alert.

According to the initial investigation by the Hawai‘i Police Department, Worrells was driving a 2019 Mercedes-Benz 300 SUV when he crossed over the double-solid yellow lines, and the vehicle struck a rock wall then overturned his injuries were serious and he was promptly transported to North Hawai‘i Community Hospital for treatment. He was pronounced dead the following morning at 8:20 a.m. yesterday, marking this the second traffic fatality in the area this new year, an increase from the same time last year when there were none.

The Hawai‘i Police Department has started a coroner's inquest to investigate the crash along with an ordered autopsy to ascertain the precise cause of death of Mr. Worrells. Officers are continuing their in-depth investigation into the events leading up to the collision and its aftermath.
